Activities and Schedule

GRI Seafood Workshops – open to all interested seafood processors and stakeholders of the seafood industry – will be held during 2008 and 2009 for the major regions of the world (see Scheduled Workshops below)

Progress and Action from GRI Seafood Workshops

The GRI Seafood Workshops will run alongside the GRI Food Processing Sector Supplement Working Group, which aims to enable food processors and stakeholders to better measure and communicate economic, environmental and social performance.

The GRI Seafood Work Shops will provide input and feedback on the indicators under development with specific reference to the seafood industry needs. The indicators developed may be a modification of a current GRI Indicator or a creation of a new indicator of food general type or seafood specific type if necessary.

As an illustrative example, the GRI Seafood Workshops may suggest indicators upon Sourcing and Product Responsibility with regards to higher environmental and ecological concerns of the seafood processing industry and its stakeholders, such as sustainability of fish stocks, environmental impact of seafood farming and legality of procured fish. It is important to underscore the complementary roles of this reporting framework for seafood processors and a certification scheme for a fishery or an aquaculture site. For instance, the use of certification schemes for primary producers may be viewed in the context of the reporting framework as an indicator of responsible seafood sourcing, aggregated to define the percent of the total volume of seafood procured that is from certified fisheries or farms.

Work Plan of the GRI Seafood Workshops

GRI Seafood Workshops will be held during 2008 and 2009 for regional stakeholders to the processing sectors in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia/New Zealand.

All workshop participants will have the opportunity to test the pilot version of the new sector supplement during 2009.

The work will be open for public commenting in August-September 2008 and October- December 2009.

The finished GRI Food Sector Supplement will be publicly available in March 2010 after review by the GRI Technical Advisory Committee and GRI Board.

Presentations, meeting notes and other work shop related material will be available for workshop participants in a web-based secure environment. Participants may communicate across the world and receive updates on the supplement’s development via the Practitioners’ Network during the project.
