Request For Proposals for Panels, Presentations, and Workshops
Responsibility Without Borders?
The sustainable seafood movement has collectively made great strides in the past few years, arguably the biggest paradigm shift ever witnessed in seafood markets. However the ever-present challenge is to maintain the momentum, and bring in new collaborators from new markets, and from through out the value chain. As our conversations and action mature we must test our community with new questions, and a common thread is emerging in those questions: what is the scope of our responsibility.
Some areas to explore might include:
- Does our responsibility stop with the fishery; the science, the local ecosystem, the biomass?
- Should our responsibility address ethical questions around the use of the fish; for human consumption, for pharmaceutical use, for animal production?
- How far does our scope of responsibility extend around social and community issues in developing, producing nations?
- To what level can the different stakeholders of the value chain influence wider policy, and what is their responsibility to do so?
- Where does the edge of our responsibility lie in protecting, even on a precautionary level, fisheries crucial to simple ecosystems; such as krill?
- What is the ethical debate on technically powerful commercial fisheries?
- How aware should the consumer be of these wider issues?
- When illegal product enters the supply chain whom is complicit?
- What role can Standards play in managing the scope of responsibility?
Instructions:
Presentations will be allotted 30 minutes with 30 minutes Q&A (1 hour total). Presentations will be limited to 2 presenters.
Panels will be 90 minutes in total length, with 45 minutes for presentation and 45 minutes for Q&A. Panels will consist of a moderator with up to 4 panelists representing a variety of viewpoints and geographies. We strongly encourage moderators to focus on facilitating the panels and discussion while recruiting interesting, dynamic presenters. Panels in which the moderator takes a speaking role will be limited to 3 additional panelists.
Workshops can be up to 3 hours in length, depending on workshop design. Proposals should be action-oriented - workshops may serve as training tools, enhance interest or participation in a particular effort, or help to brainstorm a new issue with a higher level of group interaction. Proposals for workshops should be as detailed as possible. Unlike presentations and panels, attendance at workshops will be limited to 60 - 100 people, depending on available meeting space. Workshops will run concurrently with other sessions and may be scheduled anytime during the three days of the conference.
Please note that moderators and presenters are responsible for expenses related to participation in the Seafood Summit, including travel and hotel costs. Seafood Choices will offer all speakers discounted rates for attendance of the full conference or free attendance for the day of the session. Seafood Choices has a limited amount of resources for financial assistance, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that 100% scholarships are unlikely and any allocated funds may only be used for airfare or hotel expenses and will be disbursed on a reimbursement basis.

Request for Proposals for Half-day Workshop Preceding the Summit
Seafood Choices is accepting proposals for a half-day workshop preceding the Seafood Summit in Vancouver. The goal of this workshop would be to explore a key or emerging issue in seafood or ocean conservation. The half-day workshop format provides the organizers and participants the opportunity for deeper exploration of an issue than other Summit formats.
Seafood Choices will be looking for issues that attract broad stakeholder interest and proposals with clear outcomes and opportunities for continued engagement with participants.
The half-day workshop is an event separate from the Summit and participants will be required to pay an extra fee for attendance. Groups proposing half-day workshops will be responsible for some costs related to production of the workshop.

Request for Proposals for Side Events
Along with panels, presentations and workshops Seafood Choices encourages participants to consider holding film screenings, side meetings, propose field trips and other events that support the goals of the Seafood Summit, and maximize value of this major international gathering.
We may be able to help by advising on room availability, managing film areas, making outreach on field trips or advising on opportunity - however most side events will be the responsibility, including organization, cost and main outreach, of the proposers.
Seafood Choices encourages creativity in these proposals recognizing that there will be capacity and facility restrictions.
